Heat pulse experiment sucessfully conducted

At the end of February 2013 a so called heat pulse experiment was conducted in the observation well Ktzi 203 (Subproject 2.1 within the CO2MAN project).

For this purpose a special measuring cable was installed in the borehole in 2012 in cooperation with the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LNBL).

This installation consists of one heating and one fiber optic cable to measure the temperature distribution along the whole borehole.

During the measurement the borehole temperature was controlledly increased by 30 °C. The thermal properties of the surrounding rocks are then calculated from the simultaneously measured temperature changes. With the help of this method scientist analyse the CO2 saturation in the vicinity of the borehole and thus monitor the CO2 distribution.
