Seismic Tests conducted

From May 27 till 30, 2013 seismic measurements were conducted at the Ketzin pilot site. For such measurements seismic waves are generated with a seismic source (Truck, foto) and usually detected with specially installed geophones.

However, for this test the preexicting fiber optic cables in the wells were used for detection. Therefore, the technical effort could be reduced, as the data were measured along the whole length of the wells simultaneously. Moreover, it took only four days for this test. Using a conventionel method it would have taken 3 - 4 weeks.

Benefit of seismic measurements:                                                                                                                                                                         To investigate geological formation boundaries and the distribution of the CO2 in the underground scientists use for example 3D seismics. Seismic waves propagate differently with CO2 in the pore space of the rocks. (see also Subject area 2)
